Past Grand President Enters Chapter Grand

International Council is saddened to announce that Past Grand President LaVerne Taylor Flanagan entered Chapter Grand on January 2, 2012. An initiate of Gamma Delta Chapter-Auburn University, LaVerne served on Grand Council (now called International Council) for 15 years, including seven years as Grand Vice President-Alumnae and eight years as Grand President. In addition to serving on Grand Council from 1976-1991, LaVerne previously volunteered as a National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) delegate, Foundation Trustee, International Panhellenic Committee member and Gamma Delta Alumnae Chapter President. LaVerne wore the Crescent of Epsilon Pi with Diamonds.

Although over 20 collegiate chapters were installed during her tenure as Grand President, LaVerne's presidency was a challenging time for fraternities and sororities, as public opinion focused on social issues and student abuses. In her keynote address at the 1991 International Convention, LaVerne challenged every member and chapter to focus on academic standards, true sisterhood, values and ethics. She believed focusing on the Fraternity's Ritual was important for Alpha Gamma Delta to be successful. "Our Ritual is the glue of continuity which binds us together through generations," she said. "By living closer to our Ritual and our Purpose, by adhering to the vows we took at the time of our Initiation, by living up to the ideals and values given to us by our Founders, our lives would be enriched, our goals more easily reached, the negativism of the media and many universities and college faculty and administrators would be dispelled."

A natural leader, LaVerne was also an active volunteer in her local community where she was an officer in the Women's Club of Auburn, Medical Auxiliary, Gardeners Club and Auburn United Way Board. In addition to serving on several church committees, she taught Sunday school for many years. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the LaVerne Taylor Flanagan Endowment Scholarship at the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. Sympathy cards may be mailed to Alpha Gamma Delta International Headquarters to be collected and forwarded to the family.

Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity will deeply miss and always appreciate LaVerne's heartfelt commitment to the Fraternity. We will keep her family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
